When I was approached by Slipstream to art direct the Madness merchandise range and apparel, my focus was to uncover and regenerate graphics and photographs to appear fresh, iconic, and appealing to a younger generation, who may be discovering the band for the first time. This also tied in with the bands 30th anniversary celebrations, these graphics were also used with a co-branding project with Ben Sherman.

Photographed above from a Ben Sherman shoot, are the Madness co-branded polo shirts, on the trim of the collar's is the 2 tone squares strip. On the left breast is an embroidery of the M crown logo sized at 30mm in height. This also appeared as a nape print on every tee shirt in the merchandise range.

Photographed above are three of the five Ben Sherman tee shirts co-branded with Madness. These were printed from graphics provided by myself acting on behalf of the band, design alteratiom for the OSB graphic was an extended two tone squared box.

Madness had been using a single dancing figure (the M character) and 'Fuck Art, Let's Dance' slogan in a headline font. But having uncovered a photograph of a member of 'The Selector' wearing a design with the above layout. I began re-drawing and hand rendering the type. This has appeared printed in many colour combinations , and on a variety of products since being re-introduced to the band.

A fan photographed at Madstock wearing the F.A.L.D. Navy 100% cotton Gildan tee shirt with a silk screened white plastisol ink print, sized at 300mm x 158mm.

The 'One Step Beyond' graphic, was my personal favourite design as it uses such an iconic image of the band and refreshes it by stripping it of some of its familiarity. The photo of the band is replaced by a bold and harsh black graphic image of the band placed infront of a 2tone square box with a postbox red logo in a non descript font.

Photographed above is a re-draw from the back cover of the vinyl for the bands EP 'Nutty Boys in the return of Los Palmas 7". Each member of the band has been illustrated within the Nutty Boys logo. This has also appeared on a white tee shirt and various other items of merchandise.

This is the merchandise stall at 'Madstock' containing tee shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies and programmes. There were also special items such as a Madness centinary Baracuta jacket (complete with Centenary crest embroid) and a usb stick that would contain a the audio of the concert for the night in question, that can be orded and picked up after the gig had finished.
